Be sure to enter the address 1052 North Banning Boulevard, Wilmington, CA into your GPS if you enter Drum Barracks it will send you to the residential street, Cary Avenue, which is the “front,” but the parking lot and entrance are on North Banning (the rest of the area is very industrial). Logistical details: the house has no heat or AC so winter visits will be chilly and those in summer will be hot. If we had known, we could have added on sites near the Drum Barracks like Banning House, Rancho Los Cerritos, and even a drive by of the Ferris Bueller House. Afterwards, we had lunch at the nearby eclectic Chowder Barge, then visited the International Printing Museum in Torrance, also fascinating. Very interesting and worth visiting if you love history, but small children will likely be bored. You’ll see displays of maps, photos, weapons, uniforms, camels (fascinating), and two rooms decorated in period furnishings, along with the cannon out front. We had a lot of questions, and George was able to answer all of them, incorporating some of his recent research. The displays are very detailed, and your guide will provide the highlights.

It’s worthwhile to call ahead to let them know you are coming. All tours are guided and at set times as explained on the website. I was intrigued to learn that Los Angeles had a Civil War museum so we took a day trip from Orange County and had a tour from George, who works there and researches the museum’s many artifacts.
